Sleepless Like Light is based on Brazilian author, Clarice Lispector’s novel “The Chandelier,” written when she was only twenty-three. It is her second novel and a work that helped solidify her reputation in Brazil as an original and mesmerizing writer. Fabric artist, Mimi Haddon, collaborated with Heidi Duckler to animate the interior monologues and devise characters from the odd fragments of dialogue to create a moving portrait of a family living amongst the ruins of a colonial society. Underneath the Winter Lights Festival disco ball, through layers of imagery, acts of repetition and audience engagement the work explores the contrasting ideas of impermanence and the irrevocable.
