SUMMARY:Inhabit the Dream
DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to present Inhabit the Dream\, a site-specific performance that will premiere at the Keller Fountain on Friday\, February 10th at 8:30 pm and Saturday\, February 18th at 3 pm. \nThe performances will be open to the public and be featured as part of the 2023 PDX Winter Light Festival\, with choreography by Heidi Duckler and including Heidi Duckler Dance/Northwest dancers Barbara Lima\, Charles Roy\, and Carla Mann. Dancers will perform to original compositions written by renowned Portland composer and pianist Tom Grant. \nBased on themes and choreography from Heidi Duckler Dance/Northwest’s dance film of the same name\, the eclectic piece will be brought to life as a live performance adaptation for the first time. The original film was commissioned by the Halprin Landscape Conservancy and was performed in the Keller Fountain\, designed by architect Lawrence Halprin in Portland\, Oregon. \nInhabit the Dream explores the ephemeral nature of dance and memory through light and time to cinematically construct afterimages–an image that continues to appear in the eyes after a period of exposure to the original image. These afterimages trace the dancer’s movement as they are marked in space. The dancers\, like the water in the fountain\, eventually evaporate. The unexpected and transient nature of the performance seeks to invigorate spectators and spark sudden connection between performers and audience. \nDon’t miss the opportunity to see this exciting and eccentric pop up performance and connect with Portland’s community\, history\, and art scene in a unique way. \nFeaturing choreography by Heidi Duckler and dancers Barbara Lima\, Charles Roy\, and Carla Mann.

The festival includes free movement classes\, a pop-up market with local vendors\, and a site-specific dance performance. \nLas Adelitas was named after feminist Mexican revolutionaries and the festival honors Women’s History Month as it intertwines art\, culture\, and community to offer residents of Las Adelitas and all Portlanders a platform for community-building and learning for all ages. The week-long array of activities responds to the lack of arts programming available for residents of the underserved neighborhood\, activating Las Adelitas’ public areas as inclusive spaces for intergenerational and cross-cultural community-building activities. \nLas Adelitas is a community-based development project led by Hacienda Community Development Corporation (Hacienda CDC) that attempts to mitigate the effects of rising rents on families and the inevitable displacement and gentrification within the Cully neighborhood. The project\, completed in December 2022\, transformed a neglected former strip club into a 142-unit affordable housing complex\, public plaza\, and community room. \nWhat: Mother/Other \nWho: Heidi Duckler Dance Northwest  \nWhen: March 18-24 2024 \nWhere: Las Adelitas 6723 NE Killingsworth St\, Portland\, OR\, 97218 \nAdmission Free: Tickets Here \n  \nWorkshops at Las Adelitas   \nMarch 18 – 22  \n6723 NE Killingsworth St\, Portland\, OR\, 97218 \n12:00- 2:00 pm Writing workshop for adults taught by Stephanie Adams-Santos \n2:00 – 5:00 pm HDD/NW Rehearsals open to the public \n5:30 – 7:30 pm Intergenerational Dance Class taught by Joseph Stevens \nMother/Other: A Creative Exploration of Feminine Archetypes taught by Stephanie Adams-Santos \nMarch 18th-22nd\, 12 – 2:00 pm \nJoin us for a weeklong journey into the depths of your inner world through creative explorations of sacred feminine archetypes. Guided by Heidi Duckler Dance Teaching Artist\, Joseph Stevens\, this series transcends mere dance steps—it’s an exploration of the meanings embedded in our various connections\, spanning family ties\, past connections\, future aspirations\, bonds with our surroundings\, friendships\, and life goals. Through the language of expressive movement\, participants—both kids and parents—immerse themselves in the stories and imagery that define the essence of these connections. Joseph artfully leads in translating these sentiments into dance\, a powerful vehicle for understanding and expressing the intricate threads that bind us. Join us for a week where dance becomes a medium to explore the depth and beauty of your connections—be it with family\, the past\, the future\, your surroundings\, friends\, or your aspirations in life.  \n-No previous movement experience required \n-Comfortable movement clothes are recommended \n-This class is  recommended for participants of all ages\, backgrounds and abilities. \n  \nPERFORMING ARTISTS\nJoseph Stevens\nBarbara Lima\nSasha Rivero\nTony Carnell\n [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][nectar_btn size=”jumbo” button_style=”regular” button_color_2=”Accent-Color” solid_text_color_override=”#ffffff” icon_family=”none” text=”FREE RSVP” url=”https://www.eventbrite.com/e/motherother-las-adelitas-tickets-827551307237?aff=oddtdtcreator” css_animation=”fadeIn”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text css_animation=”fadeIn”]\nTEACHING ARTISTS\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/2″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text css_animation=”fadeIn”]\nStephanie Adams-Santos\n[/vc_column_text][image_with_animation image_url=”7576″ image_size=”medium” animation_type=”entrance” animation=”None” animation_movement_type=”transform_y” hover_animation=”none” alignment=”center” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” image_loading=”default” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default”][vc_column_text css_animation=”fadeIn”]\nStephanie is a Guatemalan-American writer whose work spans poetry\, prose\, and screenwriting. As a boy growing up in Celilo Falls\, an ancient Native American site along the Columbia River\, he heard stories from his parents and grandparents. Edmo brings his rich repertoire alive for audiences near and far.\nEdmo was born in Nevada; when he was a baby\, his family moved to his father’s ancestral home of Celilo Village along the Columbia River. Edmo is enrolled in the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes and also has Yakima and Nez Pierce ancestry. His grandparents taught him many tribal customs and traditions. At Celilo\, he had the freedom to roam the countryside\, discovering the amazing landscape. “The river was a welcomed playmate\,” he recalls. In the evenings\, his grandparents and parent told stories to keep the young ones entertained. Edmo has vivid memories of the sounds of crackling wood in the woodstove and of the howling wind that raged along the Gorge. At 16\, he moved to Portland to attend high school. Later\, as he remembered the stories he grew up with\, he made the decision to make a career or carrying on the tradition of storytelling. Edmo is a master storyteller with Wisdom of the Elders. He preserves the storytelling tradition by sharing Native tales with children and adults alike. Most of his stories are of Coyote\, the trickster who often outsmarts all other living beings; he also shares creation stories of the great Columbia River—how it was formed and why it sparkles. Edmo has also been a traditional sites tour guide\, a consultant for the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian\, a poet\, a short story writer\, a recording artist\, and a playwright. He received first place at the Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center for his acclaimed one-act play\, “Grandma Choke Cherry.”\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]\nHappenings at Las Adelitas\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/2″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][image_with_animation image_url=”7610″ image_size=”medium” animation_type=”entrance” animation=”None” animation_movement_type=”transform_y” hover_animation=”none” alignment=”center” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”medium_depth” image_loading=”default” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default”][vc_column_text]\nTarot Readings\nby Stephanie Adams-Santos \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/2″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][image_with_animation image_url=”7619″ image_size=”medium” animation_type=”entrance” animation=”None” animation_movement_type=”transform_y” hover_animation=”none” alignment=”center” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”medium_depth” image_loading=”default” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default”][vc_column_text]\nSunday 3/23 ONLY\nElectric Sounds by DJ Cay\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][fancy_box box_style=”default” icon_family=”none” color=”accent-color” border_radius=”default” image_loading=”default”][/fancy_box][image_with_animation image_url=”7603″ image_size=”full” animation_type=”looped” loop_animation=”none” animation_movement_type=”transform_y” hover_animation=”none” alignment=”center” border_radius=”none” image_loading=”default” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default”][vc_column_text]\nEnter our raffle with Organics to You to receive a $50 gift certificate to farm-fresh\, organic produce! Stop by and order up with Heidi Duckler Dance Northwest! \nThe Portland Mercado bridges diverse cultures through food\, art\, and entertainment within the community of local businesses. It is a hub for Latino culture in Portland and an initiative of Hacienda CDC that provides affordable retail space for businesses to launch and grow. The market is a response to wealth disparities in the region and the strong community desire to have a center for commerce based on Latino heritage. \nDuring the winter\, Portland Mercado was severely impacted by the fire that burned through the main building. Multnomah county firefighters responded to the fire started in one of the small businesses located in the Market Hall. A few of the food cart vendors sustained significant damage and had to close temporarily. Hacienda CEO Ernesto Fonseca mentions on Oregon Live\, “…On the upper floor\, pipes are melted\, electricity’s out\, second floor windows exploded because of the heat. Everything is affected.” 10% of all proceeds from the performance cart will go towards construction costs for rebuilding the interior spaces at the Mercado which were damaged by the fire.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]¡Ordena! was made possible with support from Prosper Portland\, the Heidi Duckler Dance/Northwest Board of Directors\, and the Hacienda CDC (Community Development Corporation). This series fuses jazz and industry-style choreography—pushing dancers to explore artistry while strengthening their bodies and stage presence. We’ll dive into the performance side of dance—learning how to connect with the audience/camera\, build improvisation skills\, and develop self-confidence both on and off the floor. You’ll also work on self-motivation and body awareness through technique\, conditioning\, and guided freestyle. \nThis class is built for teens (12+) and adults\, at an intermediate level\, but all dancers—no matter your background or experience—are encouraged to join. Every session will leave you sweating\, inspired\, and more in tune with your power. \nThis workshop is part of a community-based project\, A Garden of Doors\, to bring accessible arts programming to Las Adelitas residents and the community\, nurturing local talent and celebrating diverse stories. Creative material from previous workshops will inspire the choreography for a final performance on Sunday\, February 1\, 2026. \nKBOO’s Carmelle Pierre-Louis speaks with dance artist and instructor Tony Carnell as they talk about their experience as a dancer\, and the joy of challenging people who may not see themselves as dancers to move as one. Listen to the full radio interview here. \nNo experience necessary. Comfortable clothing recommended. This piece merges music\, movement\, image and architecture in a provocative transformation of place and community. Guests are invited to enjoy wine and snacks in a relaxed\, salon-style environment that encourages creative conversation with the artists. Come As You Are is an immersive celebration of collaboration\, creativity\, and the gathering of community. \nArts for All: $5 tickets available for Oregon Trail Card holders.
