Heidi Duckler Dance Northwest is grateful to announce becoming a 2024 MAP grantee. This amazing grant will support upcoming work in 2025, Garden of Doors, a site-specific dance focusing on female autonomy and community empowerment, set to unfold in a multi-family affordable housing complex in the Cully neighborhood of Portland known as Las Adelitas. It has become a safeplace for many who seek affordable housing whilst prices noticeably continue to increase in the Portland area.
The MAP Fund is one of the longest running, private funding sources championing cultural equity and formal innovation in performance practices. In 2024, $2.883 million was awarded across 93 projects, marking the largest one-time award distribution in the organization’s 36-year history. MAP Funds go towards performing artists and their work as the critical foundation of imagining and co-creating a more equitable and vibrant society.
Heidi Duckler Dance NW Will Return to Las Adelitas
Las Adelitas is one of the largest redevelopment projects in Portland, Oregon to date, representing the biggest public investment in the community. Situated directly across from Hacienda’s headquarters, this four-story, multifamily affordable housing development provides 142 new homes, a community space, and a vibrant outdoor plaza. Heidi Duckler Dance Northwest looks forward to making a return to the space for an exciting event during Spring.
Mother/Other Filmed at Las Adelitas
The iconic plaza inside of Las Adelitas was where Heidi Duckler Dance NW’s original film Mother/Other took place. It features Barbara Lima, who recently won the best actress award at the Direct Monthly Online Film Festival for her contribution. The experimental film blends dance, narrative, and powerful imagery to explore themes of motherhood, identity, and personal transformation. It pushes the boundaries of traditional dance film, using movement to tell a deeply emotional and thought-provoking story.
We look forward to collaborating on more exciting projects with this talented artist in 2025 so stay tuned for more updates on Mother/Other’s ongoing journey in the world of dance and film.
