Dance Classes for the Youth

Our partnership with Bienestar De La Familia has given us the opportunity to start a new dance program for the youth in the Portland Cully neighborhood. Free and open to the public, kids and teens are taught contemporary dance, jazz and hip-pop in a collaborative and supportive environment. Classes are taught by dance artists, Ramon Rodriguez and Charles Roy at the Baltazar F Ortiz Community Center/ Bienestar De La familia. Participants of our program get to learn dance choreography, build self-confidence and connect with the community through movement. A final performance is put together to celebrate the progress and hard work that students put in for their friends, family and neighbors. HDD/Northwest is deeply committed to the transformative power of artistic expression and believes in its capacity to foster joy and justice through multidisciplinary collaboration between artists and communities throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Bienestar De La Familia

Bienestar de la Familia was established to serve the Latino community in Multnomah County. Today, staff also work with the Somali community, other immigrant and refugee families, and other residents in the Cully neighborhood. The team offers mental health and addiction services, case management, after school programs for teens, and hosts a free produce market every two weeks.

Community Movement Workshops

With support from the Nike Community Impact Fund (NCIF), Heidi Duckler Dance Northwest hosted an all ages dance session for family and friends of the Bienestar community with our friends from Nike. Led by dance instructors, Charles Roy and Ramòn Rodriguez, students from our summer camp got a chance enjoy a fun movement session with their parents along with employees of Nike Community Impact Fund. The outdoor futsal court by NE Killingsworth turned into a dance floor filled with laughter and joy. Stay tuned for our next group dance session.
